SUP Yoga Classes in Guernsey

What is SUP Yoga?

Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga. This means you take a practice of yoga on a SUP. The SUP is your floating mat. Yes, you practice yoga on a body of water.

SUP Yoga is physically low impacting, emotionally calming, spirituality uplifting, and energetically charging. It’s about balance, endurance and strength training. You get to train your core muscles and increase stamina and strength without realising it. You remain mindful of your breathing throughout practice - focussing on your breath helps to anchor your attention and awareness to your practice and this helps to reduce fluctuations of the mind.

A mermaid’s tale

I first discovered SUP Yoga in 2012 on some adventures. I had no idea what SUP was let alone yoga on one, but when I tried that first session Immediately fell IN LOVE and I knew it would be a big part of my life.

The follwoing summer I met an inspiring group of friends who were passionate about having fun, staying healthy and playing with water (we naturally gravitate to our tribe).  They invited me to join them for some playtime on their SUPs and it was just the most magical evening down the beach. I decided then that I needed to offer this in Guernsey.

After obtaining necessary training for both freshwater inland waterways and seawater enclosed bays, I have been teaching outdoor sessions and indoor pool based sessions since 2013.

+ What can I expect?

My classes are safe, playfully challenging, fun and of course relaxing. There’s no judgement and classes are non-competitive. We practice in a safe way which means you don’t do anything that brings discomfort and certainly not if there’s pain in any way.

We practice with Ahimsa – the practice of non-violence. When we learn to be mindful and compassionate to ourselves we are more easily available to extend that same compassion to others. Don’t ever feel you must follow step by step instruction during a session, as these are always invitations – if you do not want to take a standing posture, for example, then you simply continue the seated or kneeling variation, or take a child’s pose – always hearing the whispering of your intuitive inner guidance, not the inner critic.

+ How does SUP Yoga train my core muscles?

At over 3mtrs long, 80cm wide, and 15cm thick, you’ll be pleasantly surprised how extremely stable your floating platform has to offer. On the water, the body considers it an unstable surface which engages your core and proprioceptor muscles. You voluntarily and involuntarily engage muscles that you're not even aware of because you're so focussed on the present moment. This muscular engagement helps to keep you stable on the board preventing you falling into the water. This muscle contraction inherently helps you to develop strength, endurance, balance, coordination, courage, and confidence.

+ Who is class suitable for?

Whether you're a seasoned yogi with an established practice or you have never tried yoga or been on a paddleboard classes are suitable for all levels of ability.

Class begins with establishing presence for your practice, connecting the mind to the body through controlled breathing practices. We engage core work, and warm up the load bearing joints before mobilising the spine. Then we have fun going through different yoga poses beginning with seated postures, progressing to kneeling and then challenging yourself to standing, if you wish. We always finish with relaxation pose (Savasana). Pose modifications are offered for those wanting a mellow practice or for those really wanting to challenge themselves. Even though standing asanas are part of the sessoin a lot of what we practice during class is quite low to the board with gradual progression to standing. Unsurprisingly, not many people fall off!

+ I'm pregnant, can I join?

I offer prenatal SUP Yoga to women with healthy pregnancies in the 2nd and early 3rd trimesters who has some experience of yoga.

Due to the delicate nature of pregnancy I do not offer prenatal SUP Yoga to women in the 1st or late stages of 3rd trimester, or who has experienced complications with previous pregnancies including miscarriage.

SUP Yoga Student Experiences

Kristine is brilliant! She carefully guides you through the different poses/movements, makes it fun and really notices when you need help. It is so calming and a highlight of my week. I would recommend to anyone, particularly when you go out onto the sea. One of the best experiences!
— Fiona

Kristine was a great SUP teacher and made me feel relaxed. Floating on the water was magical. At times I felt I couldn’t do something but Kristine talked us through it and it all came together. I felt so relaxed afterwards - will definitely be going again (next week!) Namaste.
— Cassie

Went to the Full Moon SUP Yoga Nidra - it was fantastic and I felt cleansed and clear minded. The ambiance was great and Kristine is a brilliant guide. Would definitely recommend trying it and will be going again! Thank you!
— Suzy

Kristine is such an inspiring and relaxing person to be around and vibe with, and considering I’d never done yoga (let alone on a paddleboard), it’s completely changed my views and helped my mind and body already!! Can’t wait for next time!
— Jess

I love SUP Yoga so much. It’s something about the water element and the warmth in the room that really brings something new to Kristine’s wonderful yoga
